Malcolm Smith, whose enthusiasm for dirt bikes—and success racing them—helped introduce the sport to America in the 1960s and who came to define the still-growing popularity with off-road motorcycling into the 1980s, has died at the age 83 from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Smith may be best known for his starring role in the iconic 1971 Bruce Brown motorcycle documentary On Any Sunday. The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary (which it lost to some movie called Woodstock). The movie portrayed all aspects of motorcycling, from flat-track racing to cruising.
